What to pack in your hospital bag

4 min read Updated June 2026

Have your bag ready by around 36 weeks. Babies keep their own schedules, and packing early means the final weeks stay calm.

Think of it as three bags in one: things for labour, things for the days after, and things for your baby. A soft duffel is easier to live out of than a hard suitcase, and make sure your support person knows where everything lives. Mid-labour is not the moment for giving directions.

If all is well after the birth, your postnatal stay will be at Birthcare in Parnell or back at home. Amanda and Lisa will help you plan for whichever suits your whānau. Either way, the same bag covers you.

When the day comes, the birthing wards at Auckland City Hospital are on Levels 4 and 9. Call Amanda or Lisa when labour starts and they will tell you exactly where to head. Park in the main carpark off Grafton Road rather than the drop-off zone if you can.

Tick each item off as it goes in the bag. Your progress saves on this device, so you can pack over a few weekends without losing your place.
