Birthcare questions Wondering how it works? The questions whānau ask us most about birthing and staying at Birthcare. Browse all our FAQs
Can I give birth at Birthcare?
Some midwives do attend births at Birthcare, but our births happen at Auckland City Hospital. With us, you would give birth there and transfer to Birthcare afterwards for your postnatal stay. After a straightforward birth that can be just a few hours after your baby arrives, so you still spend your first nights in Parnell.
What does a stay cost?
Standard shared rooms are free for up to three nights if you are eligible for funded maternity care in New Zealand. Private rooms (with an ensuite and a fold-down partner bed) and premium rooms (with a queen bed) are paid upgrades with a nightly charge. Rates change from time to time, so see birthcare.co.nz for current pricing.
How does the transfer from hospital work?
If you have a straightforward birth at Auckland City Hospital and you are both well, you can transfer to Birthcare a few hours after your baby arrives. After a caesarean, the transfer usually happens around 24 hours later, once you are recovering well. We arrange it all with the hospital team.
How long can we stay?
Rooms are funded for up to three nights, and you can stay longer for a cost. Most families stay two to three nights. The focus is rest, recovery, and getting feeding well established before you head home.
Can my partner stay overnight?
Yes. Private rooms have a fold-down partner bed and premium rooms a queen-size bed, so partners can settle in alongside you. If you are in a funded shared room, ask Birthcare about partner stays when you book. Otherwise, immediate family are welcome from 8am to 8pm, and all other visitors from 2pm to 8pm.
